Media Statement: Why has PHM-SA been ‘disinvited’ from SABC Big Debate on Health?

The People’s Health Movement South Africa (PHM-SA) is dismayed that it has been ‘disinvited’ by the SABC from participating in the “Big Debate” on Health on Sunday evening, 14 April 2019.

PHM-SA is one of very few civil society organisations in South Africa that has contributed to the policy discussion on the National Health Insurance (NHI). The public debate has hitherto been dominated by the Minister of Health on the one hand, and the private sector on the other. Our disinvitation will inevitably limit the critical discussion.

PHM-SA is puzzled as to why it was initially invited, but then the invitation was withdrawn, even when PHM-SA offered to pay its travel costs to attend. Is this an appropriate level of professionalism or sufficient effort to be inclusive of diverse opinions from a public broadcaster?
