Share[tweet][Google][follow id=”@PHMSA1″ ]The People’s Health Movement – South Africa joins the call from civil society for an end to the Zuma Presidency.

As a member of civil society, the People’s Health Movement – South Africa (PHMSA) endorses and adds its voice to those of other organisations in civil society, senior African National Congress (ANC) members and stalwarts, some ANC branches, members of the legal profession and others who are calling for an immediate end to President Jacob Zuma’s term as President of South Africa.

We do so out of our concern for the health of the nation. The constitution specifies the right to health care for all. Yet, despite this, the vast majority of our people cannot realise their right to health because of massive social and economic inequality and poor progress in the progressive roll-out of the socioeconomic rights demanded by our constitution.

Corruption fundamentally threatens democracy and the entitlements our people should have to the social determinants of health. If the Presidency cannot lead by example, but wastes public money and fails to respect the constitution, we all suffer.  When our health care facilities in the public sector are crumbling, when medicines run out and when posts cannot be filled, money improperly spent on the President’s residence is a cost we cannot afford.

The Constitutional Court found that President Zuma, as Head of State, failed to uphold, defend and respect the Constitution. By doing so, he has fundamentally undermined the nation’s health.

We demand the resignation of President Zuma from his positions as State President. FaWe pledge ourselves to participate in a broad civil society campaign to strengthen this call.
